Princess Catherine has been awarded a significant honour by King Charles in recognition of her important role in the monarchy. However, she missed out on displaying it at a key event, the Qatar State Banquet.

In April, Princess Catherine was made a Knight of the Royal Order of the Knights of the Order of the British Empire, a title never before bestowed on a member of the royal family. The honour was formally bestowed at a ceremony at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, renowned for its royal significance. The notable appointment highlights her outstanding service and the strong bond she shares with the monarch, especially as they both face ongoing challenges.

The announcement was made on 23 April, St George's Day, a day with a long-standing British tradition of announcing new royal honours at Buckingham Palace. The appointment of Princess Catherine as an Honorary Royal Companion not only recognises her achievements, but also demonstrates King Charles’s confidence in her as a key figure in the future of the monarchy. Over the years, she has deftly balanced tradition and modernity, demonstrating the qualities expected of a future Queen Consort.

Unfortunately, she was unable to debut the title at the Qatar State Reception at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday evening due to health reasons, which limited her ability to attend multiple events in a single day. In September, Princess Catherine shared a heartfelt message confirming that she had completed chemotherapy, noting that she would gradually resume her public duties. She expressed her excitement to return to work and take part in more public appearances while focusing on maintaining her health.

King Charles and Queen Camilla hosted a state banquet for the Emir of Qatar on Tuesday evening, but the Princess of Wales was absent from the official dinner. She had earlier attended the welcoming ceremony at Horse Guards Parade in London, travelled in the carriage procession back to Buckingham Palace and viewed an exhibition of Qatari artefacts. The Royal Order of the British Empire is one of the most exclusive honours in the British monarchy, established by King George V in 1917 to recognise exceptional achievements in a wide range of fields. It has just 65 living members, including notable figures such as Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney and JK Rowling.

The prestigious order is reserved for female members of the royal family who have shown unwavering devotion and service to the monarchy. The intricately designed badge features a miniature portrait of King Charles on a pale blue silk ribbon, symbolising elegance and continuity in royal tradition. The recipient will wear it on her left shoulder on formal occasions, highlighting her vital role in supporting the monarchy. Princess Catherine’s award is not her first notable accolade; in 2019, on her eighth wedding anniversary, she received the Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order from the Queen. Fans will be keen to see if the Princess of Wales wears the medal for a special occasion, further cementing her legacy of dedication and calm service.
